Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spott ed a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent geschftlicher umgang strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construct ion work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 1 9 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Machine Learning Engineer Job Description and Salary
Machine Learning Engineer Job Description and SalaryMachine Learning Engineer Job Description and SalaryThe role of machine learning engineer is about to become one of the hottest in the IT field, suggests a new report from Robert Half, Jobs and AI Anxiety. This report, which looks at the future of work and how technology will transform jobs, reveals that 30 percent of surveyed U.S. managers said their company is currently using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), and 53 percent expect to adopt these tools within the next three to five years. As mora organizations begin to explore and invest in machine learning and artificial intelligence, theyre looking to hire more experts to integrate these technologies into their business initiatives. But what exactly does the machine learning engineer role entail? What does a machine learning engineer do?In practical terms, the job of a machine learning engineer is close to that of a data scientist. Both roles work with vast qu antities of information, require exceptional data management skills and the ability to perform complex modeling on dynamic data sets. But here the similarity ends. Data professionals produce insights, usually in the form of charts or reports that are presented to a menschlich audience. Machine learning engineers, on the other hand, design self-running software to automate predictive models. Each time the software performs an operation, it uses those results to carry out future operations with a greater degree of accuracy. This is how the software, or machine, learns.A well-known example of ML is the recommendation algorithm of Netflix, Amazon and other consumer-facing services. Each time a user watches a video or searches for a product, these sites add more data points to its algorithm. As the amount of data grows, the algorithms recommendations to the user for other content become more accurate - all without any kind of human intervention.ML is closely related to AI, and ML encompa sses deep learning (DL). This subfield uses artificial neural networks to think and solve complex problems with multi-layered (deep) data sets. Some commons examples of DL include virtual assistants, translation apps, chatbots and driverless cars. Over time, these technologies will become even more accurate and practical. Why machine learning engineers are in demandBusinesses today are awash in data, from customer interactions to IoT networks. Attempting to process all that information manually is like drinking from a fire hose. Machine learning has become essential for taking full advantage of a companys data.Applications of ML are as varied as the data itself. A few common applications includeImage and speech recognition - Machine learning excels at auto-tagging images, text-to-speech conversions and anything else that requires turning unstructured data into useful information.Customer insight - Association rule learning, the way ML software makes connections, drives the algorith ms at the heart of e-commerce, telling consumers who buy product A that they might like product X.Risk management and fraud prevention - ML algorithms can analyze huge volumes of historical data to make financial predictions, from future investment performance to the risk of loan defaults. Regression testing also makes it easier to spot fraudulent transactions in real time. What to expect in a machine learning engineer job descriptionBecause ML is an emerging role, not many IT specialists have direct experience with it. Thats why fruchtwein machine learning engineer job descriptions today seek out data scientists with a programming background. The reverse can also be true Coders and programmers with solid data skills can transition to become machine learning engineers, though they may need experience in a data role beforehand.A job description for machine learning engineers typically includes the followingAdvanced degree in computer science, math, statistics or a related disciplineEx tensive data modeling and data architecture skillsProgramming experience in Python, R or JavaBackground in machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or KerasKnowledge of Hadoop or another distributed computing systemsExperience working in an Agile environmentAdvanced math skills (linear algebra, Bayesian statistics, group theory)Strong written and verbal communicationsMachine learning engineer salaryAs a fairly new job title, there arent enough data points to give a definitive range for machine learning engineer salaries. However, as this role lies between data science and software engineering, your could use information from the Technology 2019 Salary Guide to make a fairly accurate estimate of how much employers are likely to offer potential new hires. Here are some starting salary midpoints (national median salary) for related positionsBig data engineer $155,000Data architect $133,500Data scientist $121,500Data modeler $98,500Developer/programmer analyst $104,500Software eng ineer $124,500How to shore up your machine learning engineer resumeThe weakest part on most resumes of data professionals seeking an ML role is a lack of programming experience. If this is you, focus on honing your coding skills. Python is the most popular programming language in ML. The big reason is that its relatively easy to learn, but Python also is extremely well supported with powerful machine learning libraries. R is also commonly used, and you may need Java and/or C++ for developing applications. For programmers wishing to switch to machine learning engineering, youll need experience with big data sets. One way to do that is to join Kaggle, the Google-owned site that bills itself as the place to do data science projects. This online group of data scientists and machine learners share datasets for experiments, and the site offers many courses to help you develop and brush up on your skills. To stand out from the crowd, consider taking courses from Amazon - the machine learnin g giant and creator of Alexa. Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers ML training and certification with four paths developer, business decision maker, data scientist and data platform engineer. Best of all, theyre free.

Get Inspired With Our 2015 Job Search Checklist
Get Inspired With Our 2015 Job Search ChecklistGet Inspired With Our 2015 Job Search ChecklistGet a better job is among the most popular New Years resolutions, according to the federal government. This comes as no surprise to us at Simply Hired. We traditionally see visitors to simplyhired.com increase by 30 percent each January compared to the previous December. January is historically one of our busiest job search months each year.If you, like many of your colleagues, feel its time to reboot and start fresh in your career, here are some suggestions to get you started.1. List what youre thankful forAttitude impacts everything in your job search, from when, how and how long you look for work to how you present yourself during interviews. No amount of applications, networking or job fairs will compensate if you are feeling depressed, unmotivated and bitter.Give yourself an attitude boost by listing five things that youre thankful for in your life. Do you have a friend, family member o r pet that loves you? Do you have indoor plumbing? (Some 1.6 million Americans dont.)Do you have electricity in your home? Do you have a place to live? Did you laugh about anything last week? Did you eat anything wonderful recently? Even when times are tough, you can likely find a few things to be grateful for.2. Create a daily goal listSometimes a job search can seem like a never-ending flood of tasks. You can always apply to one more job, and its easy to fall into a guilt-induced trap of feeling like youre not doing enough. Remember that attitude impacts everything, and its hard to maintain a positive attitude when you feel that youre not doing enough. This is where a daily goal list comes into play. A simple checklist of no more than three goals can help you stay on track, give you a sense of productivity and allow you to feel a sense of accomplishment as you check off the items. Even better, an organized, consistent approach to your search is also more likely to result in a job. Consider the following example.Apply to three companiesSend a just catching up email to two former coworkers, contacts or people in your industry (your network)Read one article online about one of the following topics job search/interviewing/resume tips, trends in your industry, employment trends, national or world news3. Revisit your financesYou may not be able to control when youll find a job, but you can exercise at least some control over the money youre currently spending. If you dont know where your money goes each month, make it a priority to figure it out now. Once you know how much money you require to live, you can look at tradeoffs in terms of your job search. For exampleEliminating three coffees from Starbucks = one lunch to network with your old bossEliminating your cable TV package and watching YouTube videos or Hulu for two months = groceries for one additional month that you might be unemployedEliminating a night on the town with friends = a potluck movie night at som eones house + a haircut and a tank of gas before your next interview4. Determine your minimum standardsIf you have been looking for a job for a long time, you may have fallen prey to well-meaning friends and relatives who suggest that you take any job, even one outside of your field or below your desired salary. Depending on your situation, this might be good advice. But proactively thinking about the timetable and plan that works for you will help you to manage your job search as well as respond to your friends in a deliberate way.Create a flowchart for your job search and think through what triggers make sense for your personal situation. For exampleThe right job for you is out there. And at Simply Hired, were doing everything we can to help you make 2015 the year of finding a job that you love. Good luck and Happy New Year.

The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying
The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying Written several years ago, the simple article â Top Five Regrets Of The Dying â recounts the lessons learned by a hospice worker in Australia from her departing patientsâ¦Bronnie Ware writes: âFor many years I worked in palliative care. My patients were those who had gone home to die. Some incredibly special times were shared. I was with them for the last three to twelve weeks of their lives.People grow a lot when they are faced with their own mortality. I learned never to underestimate someoneâs capacity for growth. Some changes were phenomenal. Each experienced a variety of emotions, as expected, denial, fear, anger, remorse, more denial and eventually acceptance. Every single patient found their peace before they departed though, every one of them. When questioned about any regrets they had or anything they would do differently, common themes surfaced again and again. Here are the most common five:1. I wish Iâd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.This was the most common regret of all. When people realize that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people have had not honoured even a half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made.It is very important to try and honour at least some of your dreams along the way. From the moment that you lose your health, it is too late. Health brings a freedom very few realise, until they no longer have it.2. I wish I didnât work so hard. This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their childrenâs youth and their partnerâs companionship. Women also spoke of this regret. But as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners. All of the men I nursed deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence.By simplifying your lifestyle and making conscio us choices along the way, it is possible to not need the income that you think you do. And by creating more space in your life, you become happier and more open to new opportunities, ones more suited to your new lifestyle.3. I wish Iâd had the courage to express my feelings. Many people suppressed their feelings in order to keep peace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming. Many developed illnesses relating to the bitterness and resentment they carried as a result. We cannot control the reactions of others. However, although people may initially react when you change the way you are by speaking honestly, in the end it raises the relationship to a whole new and healthier level. Either that or it releases the unhealthy relationship from your life. Either way, you win.4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.Often they would not truly realise the full benefits of old friends until their dying weeks and it was not always possible to track them down. Many had become so caught up in their own lives that they had let golden friendships slip by over the years. There were many deep regrets about not giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved. Everyone misses their friends when they are dying. It is common for anyone in a busy lifestyle to let friendships slip. But when you are faced with your approaching death, the physical details of life fall away. People do want to get their financial affairs in order if possible. But it is not money or status that holds the true importance for them. They want to get things in order more for the benefit of those they love. Usually though, they are too ill and weary to ever manage this task. It is all comes down to love and relationships in the end. That is all that remains in the final weeks, love and relationships.5. I wish that I had let myself be happier. This is a surprisingly common one. Many did not realise until the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. The so-called âcomfortâ of familiarity overflowed into their emotions, as well as their physical lives. Fear of change had them pretending to others, and to their selves, that they were content. When deep within, they longed to laugh properly and have silliness in their life again. When you are on your deathbed, what others think of you is a long way from your mind. How wonderful to be able to let go and smile again, long before you are dying.Life is a choice. It is YOUR life. Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly. Choose happiness.â [ tweet this ]~ ~ ~Now, Readers, you may find this an awkward time to ponder the great questions of your existence. After all, mornings are the time for starting, not for stopping, or for navel-gazing, and thereâs a helluva work to get done today. But, in fact, there is no better time than this morning for you to be thinking about the future and how youâll look back on the past; on how youâll look back on today.Thatâs because every change begins with a start, just like this morning. Are you doing what makes sense for you and your family? Are you doing whatâs right for who you are and who you want to be? Are you living the way you will wish you had wanted to?In my conversations with subscribers like you over the years, Iâve found time and again that the answers to those questions are: ânoâ.And when asked the reason why?⦠thereâs never much of a good answer other than that they hadnât started yet.So this morning, on your way to work, as you sit there, alive and living in a way that someday, somewhere, youâll remember fondly, distantly, perhaps ruefullyâ¦Take this moment to ask yourself the most courageous question of all:Will I regret this when Iâm gone?Whatever your answer, Readers, you knowâ¦P.S. I also loved these life lessons shared by Erma Bombeck and Regina Brett. âI would have taken the time to listen to my g randfather ramble about his youth.â and âThe best is yet to come.â Indeed.

8 Little Things That Drive Your Coworkers Crazy
8 Little Things That Drive Your Coworkers Crazy 8 Little Things That Drive Your Coworkers Crazy Most of us know the big office faux pas to avoid - even someone completely new to the workforce recognizes that lying, bullying , stealing, insubordination and the like are big no-nos. But beyond the major infractions of workplace decorum, there are a number of smaller, less serious but still irritating offenses. These things probably wonât get you fired, but they sure can get on your coworkersâ nerves after a while. And if you really want to get ahead in the workplace, it helps for your colleagues to have your back. After all, having them put in a good word for you to your manager or senior leadership may just be the key to you getting that promotion or new assignment youâve been wanting. Plus, when youâre surrounded by folks that you have good working relationships with, showing up to the office every day is a whole lot more pleasant. So if you want to stay on good terms with your colleagues, take a look at the eight following bad workplace habits - and make a mental note to drop them ASAP. This might be my number one pet peeve. I take a lot of pride in crafting strong emails, so when I send one out only to get a response that either a) asks a question whose answer can be found directly in the copy of the email or b) only addresses part of my query, I canât help but roll my eyes. Sure, you might justify sending a hasty response because youâre busy - but chances are, your coworkers are too. And when they have to explain something to you again, you waste their valuable time. Do the right thing and read emails in their entirety before you fire back with further responses - itâs a small action, but when added up over and over again, it can make a big difference. Donât get me wrong - thereâs nothing wrong with snacking at the office. Sometimes, a granola bar or stick of string cheese is exactly what you need to regain your energy and power through the afternoon. But if your coworkers can hear you even with headphones on, you need to mind your manners. If you need something to munch on, close your mouth, and preferably avoid snacks with particularly loud packaging. Your coworkersâ eardrums will thank you. Look, meetings can definitely be useful (lord knows I love a good brainstorm ). But if you set up 30 minutes on somebodyâs calendar just to ask them a question that could easily be answered via a quick email or a five-minute chat, you should rethink your approach. Even if you donât end up taking the full time you set aside, pulling people away from their desk can interrupt their flow state - and studies suggest it takes about 25 minutes to find your rhythm again. Handle things via email, chat or quick in-person discussions when you can, and save the meetings for brainstorms and big discussions. Most of the time, people will be pretty understanding if you have to pick up an urgent business-related call at your desk - but when you make a habit of scheduling your doctorâs appointments or chatting with your significant other about tonightâs dinner plans while parked in your seat, your colleagues have a right to be irritated. More and more offices are opting into open seating, and while this can be great for collaboration, it also opens up the door for more distractions. Grab an empty conference room, step into the hallway or, if itâs nice enough, take a little walk outside. Who knows? Getting a little extra natural light may be just what the doctor ordered. âHey, I have a question.â âHello?â âHello??â âARE YOU THERE???â There are few quicker ways to drive your coworkers crazy than constantly sending them rapid-fire messages like these - especially if itâs after working hours. Technology has allowed us to get in touch with our colleagues faster than ever, but remember: with great power comes great responsibility. If the situation truly warrants it, you might be able to get away with sending chats like this. But if you want to build a good rapport with your office mates , itâs best to keep chat storms like this few and far between. Itâs a scientific fact: people are generally worse at multitasking than they think they are. So even if you swear you can finish hammering out that email while fully processing your coworkerâs brilliant new idea for a new feature, you probably canât. People often resort to this as a time-saving measure, but the truth is, itâll likely take you more time to half-heartedly attempt two things than to put your entire efforts behind one thing at a time. Besides, itâs just common courtesy to give someone your full attention! For better or worse, Google has become a staple of our everyday lives. Itâs to the point that whenever people encounter an obstacle at work, Google is usually the first place they turn. So if a coworker comes to you with a problem they canât solve, technical or otherwise, try not to just tell them to Google it - odds are, they probably have and couldnât find an answer, which is why they came to you. Suggesting the most obvious next step can come across as dismissive and condescending, so take the time to thoroughly hear them out and come up with a meaningful solution together. Who among us hasnât had our inbox held hostage by a never-ending barrage of reply-alls at one point or another? You know how annoying it is to be on the receiving end, so use your best judgment when weighing in on a thread that was sent to a large group (especially if itâs an all-company email). Most workers out there suffer from inbox overload , so if you can do anything to help reduce the barrage of unnecessary communications they receive on a daily basis, your efforts will be greatly appreciated.

5 Signs You Should Quit Your Job Right Now (Or Soon)
5 Signs You Should Quit Your Job Right Now (Or Soon) 5 Signs You Should Quit Your Job Right Now (Or Soon) How do you feel when you wake up for work every morning? Good or simply miserable beyond expression? If the latter is the case, itâs probably about time to quit your job. Still, making such weighty decisions isnât always easy. Thereâs a whole list of things to consider, including most peopleâs innate resistance to change. In addition to that, you might worry about money, have self-esteem issues, or simply not know what you really want. For this reason, a bit of introspection is in order. If youâre unsure whether your frustrations are only momentary or whether you should quit your job, keep reading. Weâve put together some hard-earned truths to help you move on. 1. Youâre no longer learning new things Once you stop learning new things at a job, itâs time to move on. Never consider any job to be the last one youâll ever had. Why? First, in this time and age people are changing jobs frequently. Second, you donât want to fall behind. As soon as you stop learning, you might as well give up on your career entirely. If you stay too long in a job that doesnât allow you to learn, you waste your time and sabotage your future. As soon as you stop learning, you might as well give up on your career entirely. Besides, once you stop learning, it means your job has become boring. Watch out for the feelings of inescapable routine and lack of challenge. 2. You canât stop venting about your job At this point, your familyâs sick and tired of your complaints about your job. Itâs time to stop. Do you know why you vent all the time? Because you already know youâd rather bite your leg off than spend there another minute. Still, you feel like you lack the means or courage to make that final decision. So donât hesitate to leave as soon as you can. Thereâs only so much negativity you and your close ones can endure. Besides, itâs also a bit unfair to your employer. Take control and make things better for everyone. 3. Youâve lost all interest in your work It has become clear to you that your job has nothing to do with your ultimate goals or personal interests. The outcomes of your work began to seem meaningless, or even worse, negative to you. In the end, finding meaning at work is more important than feeling happy. Having a sense of purpose in oneâs work is beyond important. Did you know that happy employees are 12% more productive than unhappy ones? They also take 10x fewer sick days. In the end, you canât succeed if you donât believe in the positive good of what youâre doing. Failure to do so results in lessened productivity and possibly even in long-term health problems. Donât risk it. Quit your job now and put your talents to work somewhere else. 4. You have no time for yourself anymore If you want to be happy at work, have a life outside of it. Itâs what you do outside of work that truly defines you. In the end, you need this time to recharge, foster important relationships, and have time to truly learn. In other words, do all the things that improve your quality of life. Many people underestimate the importance of downtime. But remember- Youâre neither Elon Musk nor Steve Jobs. Itâs borderline insane these people are put up as standards for all of us to measure against. Their crazy, 100+ working hours per week are not something a normal person can do. you need this time to recharge, foster important relationships, and have time to truly learn. If you donât take enough time to enjoy the fruits of your work, you risk your mental and physical well-being. Not only that. You also sabotage your success in the future, as you really need that time to grow and develop yourself as a well-rounded human being. 5. Deep down you believe youâre meant for better, bigger things Your gut feelings are not something to ignore. People tend to settle for whatever position they find available at the moment, only to keep regretting it later. After all, following your ambition often requires an active approach, not simply waiting until something better comes your way. Donât ignore your ambition. If you believe youâre meant for better things, you probably are. Simply reach out for them. It will bring you more joy, success, and satisfaction. Donât waste time feeling you should be elsewhere doing something else. Bonus point: If youâre reading this article, its time to quit your job Employment is sometimes like being in a relationship. Once you start looking for a way out, itâs time to end it. Why did you click on this link? What brought you here? Quit your job as soon as you can and move on. Better things are waiting for you just behind the corner. Find out how to keep your morale up while job searching. Also, youll need to know how to write your resume and cover letter. It will help you find the job of your dreams faster. Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments!
