Resume Writing For The Previously Self Employed
Resume Writing For The Previously Self EmployedOnce you've entered the self employed world, you need to be very careful about what you write on your resume. In particular, you need to be sure that your resume is not an attempt to conceal any sort of less than ideal work history or a history of poor performance from your past employers. You may have a record of excellent performance from past employers when you were self-employed. That doesn't mean, however, that your new employer will see that record. As a result, it's imperative that you be absolutely open and honest when you are writing your resume. For example, if you've been in charge of 'managing' a company in the past, that simply means that you did the job well and have earned the right to say that you are the best manager the company has ever had. It doesn't make you a good manager now, but it does establish you as the best manager you've ever been. If you've been in charge of the same company before and afterward, you'll want to go back to the company and present yourself as someone who has been managing effectively for all of those years.Another example is if you may have previously worked as a salesperson. In this case, you are best described as a professional, a salesperson, and not simply a business owner. You also have a professional license to sell in your state, so you're the person who is responsible for a high-volume of sales. Again, you don't necessarily need to have been selling from the point of view of a business owner, but you can present yourself as a professional who can do a good job at selling. This does not mean, however, that you can be dishonest about prior employers. In fact, if you have a negative experience from your previous employer, you should still be forthright about it. Noone is going to know about your past negative experiences unless you tell them, and, in that case, you must be very honest. One of the major downsides to being self-employed is that you are often faced with t he same problems as a person who works for a large corporation, like a salesperson or a financial professional: who will you report to? If you can't rely on your last employer to provide you with human resources help, then your only other option is to go through the very competitive hiring process with your next employer. That can be an extremely stressful prospect and can put the squeeze on you, even if you know the company and the person you will be working for are the best in the business. If you want to be able to display honesty on your resume without having to worry about who will represent you to your previous employer, you should take the initiative to set up a meeting with your new employer to go over your qualifications and abilities. When you have a formal meeting to show your employer why you are the best choice for the job, your resume is your new best friend. It takes two to make a business work. Your resume represents the most important resource you have to convince you r former employer that you are the person they need to hire. So, to be sure your resume is written properly, always look for opportunities to be completely honest and to offer exactly what you want your new employer to see in you.
